The National Park Service awarded a design-build contract to Classic Site Solutions for the rehabilitation of roads and bridges within the Gettysburg National Military Park and the Eisenhower National Historic Site in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The scope of this project consisted of preparing design documents using treatments recommended by the Northeast Region’s Pavement Management System. It also called for the validation of the recommendations, making alternate recommendations as needed, and construction in accordance with the final design documents.
The Battle of Gettysburg site, the location of the Civil War’s bloodiest battle, demanded strict attention to protecting and preserving historic and cultural features. The project was significantly more complex and sensitive than the average road or bridge project. To ensure that all improvements would be meticulously accomplished without impacting the overall setting of the area, Classic’s management team acquired a working knowledge of the historical significance of the site. In total, eight separate roads comprising nearly six miles of pavement were repaired, a 5,000-square-yard parking lot was revitalized, three bridges were rehabilitated, and a fourth bridge was totally replaced. Three additional roads covering 2.7 miles were also designed.
