Westover Air Reserve Base Rehabilitation and Addition, Chicopee, MA

Contract # FA6606-08-C-0001

Faced with the need to process an ever growing number of military personnel at the Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee, MA, Classic Site Solutions, Inc. was awarded the contract to renovate the existing 10,000-square-foot personnel center Building 1875 and construct a 2,000-square-foot addition.

In order to provide uninterrupted services to the servicemen and women, Classic used the following three-phase construction schedule:

  1. Phase One involved remodeling an adjacent building on the base to be used as temporary offices. One half of Building 1875’s administrative staff was then relocated by Classic during a single weekend into the temporary offices.
  2. Phase Two required a total gut and renovation of the vacated part of Building 1875 and construction of the new addition. The work was completed while the balance of Building 1875 was occupied and completely functional. Safety was a major factor during this phase. Discreet, covered passages were constructed to insure unrestricted and secure access through the construction area to the operational part of the building. The renovation included installation of new electrical, fire suppression, and data communications systems. New flooring and ceilings were installed and walls were painted. The addition consisted of concrete block walls with a brick veneer, a flat membrane roof, and an independent HVAC system, as well as new electrical, fire, and data communications systems. All the glazing was blast resistant, including the new entry vestibule that featured glass walls and a sloped glass roof. Once Phase Two was complete, Classic moved administrative staff and personnel into the newly renovated areas of the building.
  3. Phase Three entailed the renovation of the remaining area and the complete restoration of Building 1875.

Classic completed the entire construction and renovation process in six months and services to military personnel were never stopped or interrupted.
