Road and Sidewalk Upgrades, Natick, MA
Contract # W912WJ-07-R-0020
The U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center is comprised of 124 buildings and is located on 174 acres only 17 miles from downtown Boston, MA. Facilities include administration, laboratories, maintenance, storage, and housing areas and are dedicated to the research and development of food, clothing, shelters, airdrop systems, and various soldier support items. The Center also utilizes the resources of 136 colleges and universities and 25 teaching and research hospitals, all within 75 miles of the Center.
Operating since the mid 1950’s, the infrastructure of the Center was in need of considerable rehabilitation. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers asked Classic Site Solutions to reconstruct and resurface the majority of the facilities’ roadways and sidewalks. Classic repaved 25,000 square yards of roadway and parking areas, replaced 16,000 square feet of sidewalks, installed 4,000 feet of granite curbing, and performed additional roadside improvements.
The Center is a densely populated research facility presenting logistical and safety obstacles for any road construction project. Classic utilized a system of warning and safety signs, daily construction progress bulletins, “Two Week Look Ahead” construction schedules updated weekly, and traffic control personnel to insure that all those using the Center were kept current with the locations and type of construction under way. These mechanisms ensured pedestrian safety and an uninterrupted flow of traffic throughout the facility at all times.
